01 The Why

Why HMOs are the most studied component of breast milk

Human milk oligosaccharides are special carbohydrates that make up the third most abundant solid in breast milk, after fat and lactose. The baby cannot actually digest them. That is the point. HMOs travel through the upper digestive tract intact and arrive in the lower gut, where they feed the specific bacteria that thrive in the infant microbiome.

There are more than 200 different HMOs identified in human breast milk so far. Researchers have spent the past two decades figuring out which ones do what, and the science has matured to the point where infant formulas now include one or two HMOs as standard. NurtureBio includes five. They were selected to represent the major structural classes found in breast milk and to support the bacteria most associated with early-life gut health.

A note on pediatric care NurtureBio is a daily nutritional supplement, not a treatment for any medical condition. If you have questions about your baby's nutrition or gut health, your pediatrician is the right place to start.
02 The Science

The five HMOs in every sachet

A blend that reflects the structural diversity of HMOs in breast milk.

01
Fucosylated HMO

2'-Fucosyllactose 2'-FL

The most abundant HMO in breast milk for most mothers. 2'-FL has been studied extensively for its role in supporting beneficial gut bacteria and the developing immune system. It is also the HMO most commonly added to modern infant formulas.

02
Fucosylated HMO

Difucosyllactose DFL

A fucosylated HMO that pairs with 2'-FL in breast milk and supports a similar set of gut functions. Including DFL alongside 2'-FL gives the gut microbiome a closer match to the structural profile of breast milk than a single-HMO product can offer.

03
Core HMO

Lacto-N-tetraose LNT

One of the core neutral HMOs in breast milk and a foundational substrate for Bifidobacterium infantis, the bifidobacterium most closely associated with the infant gut. LNT is part of how breast milk shapes which bacteria flourish in the early microbiome.

04
Sialylated HMO

3'-Sialyllactose 3'-SL

A sialylated HMO involved in gut development and studied in the context of brain development and cognitive function during early life. Sialylated HMOs make up a meaningful portion of total HMO content in breast milk.

05
Sialylated HMO

6'-Sialyllactose 6'-SL

The other major sialylated HMO in breast milk. 6'-SL helps nourish beneficial bacteria in the infant gut and has been studied for its role in early neurodevelopment alongside 3'-SL.

The Pathway

How HMOs feed the bacteria that build the infant gut

HMOs in breast milk Five structural classes
The infant gut Where bacteria live
Bifidobacteria flourish B. infantis highlighted

HMOs are not for the baby. They are for the bacteria the baby is trying to grow. Specifically, HMOs support the bifidobacteria that dominate the gut of a healthy breastfed infant, with Bifidobacterium infantis being the most studied example. When those bacteria flourish, they produce short-chain fatty acids that help support the gut barrier, support the developing immune system, and support comfortable digestion.

This is what makes a synbiotic different from a probiotic alone. A probiotic introduces beneficial bacteria. A prebiotic feeds them. A synbiotic does both at once, which is what breast milk has been doing for the entire history of human development.

Founder Story

Built by parents who lived this

NurtureBio was started by Stuart and Christina Smith after their son fell from the 30th to the 6th growth percentile and went through five rounds of antibiotics in five months. They could not find a product that took the infant gut microbiome seriously, so they built one with help from leading researchers in the field.

07 FAQ

Common questions from parents

What are HMOs?

Human milk oligosaccharides, or HMOs, are special carbohydrates that make up the third most abundant solid in breast milk after fat and lactose. They are not digested by the baby. Instead, they travel intact to the lower gut where they feed the beneficial bacteria that thrive in the infant microbiome.

How many HMOs are in NurtureBio?

NurtureBio includes five HMOs in every sachet: 2'-fucosyllactose, difucosyllactose, lacto-N-tetraose, 3'-sialyllactose, and 6'-sialyllactose. They were selected to represent the major structural classes found in breast milk.

How is this different from HMO formula?

Most modern infant formulas include one or two HMOs as part of their nutritional profile, typically 2'-fucosyllactose. NurtureBio includes five HMOs in a synbiotic format with four probiotic strains. It is designed as a daily supplement that works alongside whatever feeding approach your family uses, whether that is breast milk, formula, or a combination.

What is the difference between a prebiotic and a probiotic?

A probiotic is a beneficial bacteria. A prebiotic is the food that beneficial bacteria eat. HMOs are a specialized type of prebiotic, naturally abundant in breast milk and uniquely suited to feeding the bacteria found in the infant gut. A synbiotic, which is what NurtureBio is, combines both in one product.

Can I give NurtureBio to a breastfed baby?

Yes. NurtureBio is formulated to complement breast milk, not replace it. The HMOs and probiotic strains in the product are modeled after what breast milk naturally provides, and many families use it as part of a routine that supports their baby's gut health regardless of feeding method.

Can I give NurtureBio to a formula-fed baby?

Yes. NurtureBio works alongside any feeding approach. It mixes easily into formula, breast milk, water, or soft foods depending on your baby's age.

What ages is NurtureBio for?

NurtureBio is formulated for babies and toddlers ages 0 to 48 months.

How do I give it to my baby?

One sachet per day, mixed into a small amount of breast milk, formula, water, or soft food. For younger babies on milk only, mixing into a small volume of breast milk or formula tends to work best.

Are HMOs safe for infants?

HMOs are naturally present in human breast milk and have been part of the human diet for as long as humans have existed. The HMOs used in modern supplements and formulas are produced through precision fermentation and are structurally identical to the HMOs in breast milk. They have been extensively studied for safety in infants.

How long until I notice anything?

Every baby is different. Gut health products generally work best with consistent daily use over time. NurtureBio is built as ongoing daily support, not a quick fix.

When should I call my pediatrician?

Call your pediatrician if your baby has fever, vomiting, poor feeding, blood in the stool, persistent crying, signs of dehydration, or a sudden change in behavior. NurtureBio supports daily gut health and is not a substitute for medical care.
